This project was supported by Ministry of Culture Taiwan and produced by Open Contemporary Art Center / Petamu Project.
This music video is a collaboration with the singer-songwriter Tseng Zi-Yi, charting an attempt to inscribe the lowly regarded tilapia fish into the popular domain of the internet. The piscine protagonist of this song was personified by Tseng, while the lyrics were partly inspired by the Taiwanese recipes for tilapia dishes. This work interrogates the complex branding exercise that has been performed upon this fish – from being demonised a foreign invasive species to its association with being a free protein source for some migrant workers in Taiwan, before being gradually nationalised and naturalised as the Taiwanese Sea Bream.
