This installation was first presented at the transmediale 2026 alongside a tilapia tasting programme. Tilapia is a deceptively simple fish—nutritionally plain, economically powerful, and culturally loaded. It sits at the intersection of subsistence, aquaculture, migration, and aspiration. The installation functions as a compression device, holding multiple lines of inquiry that emerge from the artist’s long-term preoccupation with tilapia as a cultural and material figure. Drawing from the artist’s own upbringing, shrines and aquariums are familiar features in many middle-class Malaysian Chinese households. The work takes the form of a syncretic domestic shrine paired with a tropical ornamental aquarium—a system of belief, care, and maintenance embedded in everyday life. Centered on tilapia, a globally farmed freshwater fish often associated with affordability and resilience, the shrine gestures toward how food, value, and survival are shaped by ordinary infrastructures, from aquaculture and cold-chain logistics to experimental closed ecological life support systems (CELSS), where tilapia is frequently cited as a candidate species for future space-based food production. Using simulated aquatic life rather than living organisms, the installation stages a closed, aestheticised ecological system that mirrors both domestic aquariums and speculative models of sustenance. Here, tilapia becomes not an object of worship but a post-religious deity of survival. In the city, tilapia lives a “double life.” While African, Caribbean, and other migrant communities celebrate it as a heritage staple, the commercial food industry often obscures its identity by rebranding it as “perch” (Barsch in German) or other fish. To examine this dynamic, a tilapia sampling session was conducted by ordering dishes explicitly labelled “tilapia” through Berlin’s online food delivery platforms. The tasting experience made the tilapia food chain visible by contrasting three distinct market identities. The first presented tilapia as a heritage staple: a whole fish served bone-in and celebrated by name. The second appeared as an anonymous commodity, sold as affordable oven- or microwave-ready meals renamed Buntbarsch (“Colourful Perch”) to sound familiar and local to German consumers. The third introduced a sustainable Berlin-grown tilapia, marketed as Hauptstadtbarsch (“Capital Perch”) and sourced from an eco-friendly aquaponic farm in Malzfabrik, Schöneberg. food-sampling activation at the Wan Hai Hotel: Singapore Strait opening dinner reception, serving line-caught fish from Singapore’s shoreline. Three days prior to the event, I visited Sembawang Park Jetty, Punggol Point Jetty, and Bedok Jetty to barter for anglers’ catch of the day using canned drinks, fishing equipment, cigarettes, and NTUC FairPrice vouchers. Much of the seafood sold in Singapore is imported from neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, and fish from Singapore’s own waters are not commonly available or are less price-competitive. Yet the shoreline is not only part of a national border or supply chain—it is also read by some as a place where food can still be gathered. This programme brought people together through the collective consumption of fish caught along Singapore’s shoreline. Some migrant workers navigate urban landscapes through an ethic of subsistence, self-reliance, and ecological knowledge shaped by agrarian backgrounds. In cities, this knowledge appears in practices such as fishing along coastlines, collecting shellfish from mudflats, or foraging edible plants from roadsides. Yet these acts often become hyper-visible in their hands, framed as transgressions rather than knowledge. Urban fishing, in particular, is frequently cast as a hygiene issue rather than recognized as environmental literacy and a long-overlooked right to harvest from one’s surroundings. Harvesting seafood requires sensory attunement, intergenerational knowledge, and an acceptance of uncertainty—qualities at odds with “supermarket modernity,” which privileges convenience, standardization, and disconnection from origin, seasonality, and labour. participated in a 1-month residency to respond to the "隱身之海、增生之城 | Invisible Ocean, Growing City" exhibition – Next Art Tainan 2025, curated by Nobuo Takamori, in Taiwan, to expand on my artistic research on the intertidal fish – mudskipper. In my previous projects, I've re-envisioned a localised version of the municipal emblem of George Town with mudskipper (2019), speculated a set of callisthenics movements during Assembridge Nagoya (2022), and made a dance instruction video inspired by the mudskipper (2023). During this residency, I explored the possibility of creating mudskipper-flavoured instant noodles as a food souvenir of Tainan, drawing inspiration from one of its classic delicacies – 花跳湯 (mudskipper soup), similar to how many Asian cities promote their culinary traditions. Despite numerous attempts to find mudskipper as a cooking ingredient in various fish markets in Tainan and inquiring at numerous restaurants about their availability, the fish has proven to be as elusive as its internet presence. This project highlights the disconnect between the existence of the Taiwanese mudskipper as a viral internet meme and the transition of food culture amongst the locals from a diverse range of game fishes to predominantly farmed fishes today. The only mudskipper I found was printed on a banner, and the fish store owner, who was very generous with her knowledge of game fishes, kindly gifted the banner to me for use at the exhibition. I decided to embroider the mudskipper to commemorate its transformation from a once-popular local delicacy to a 'legendary' fish, whose taste can only be reminisced about by the old-timers. I have a habit of visiting these markets and collecting old photographs, particularly photographs where I don’t always immediately understand the content or context, or photographs that look slightly odd. Since its designation as a joint UNESCO World Heritage site, both the state of Penang and local businesses have promoted George Town as a popular destination for cultural tourism.&nbsp; This branding exercise has stimulated a trade in nostalgia, particularly manifested in the recycling of found objects as novel souvenirs for tourists or interior decoration for business owners. Other than looking at the typical photographs we see in antique stores that feature social rites (such as weddings, birthdays, funerals, etc.) or the prized Peranakan family studio portraits, I am more interested in the anonymous, amateur everyday candids that are sometimes awkwardly posed, performative, blown out, underexposed, or in soft focus. I am intrigued by how these time-eroded personal keepsakes, nibbled away by silverfish, ended up being recirculated. Reading these photographs is an act of narrating everyday histories, even if they have to be excavated from other people’s staged realities, through lenses both voyeuristic and literal. If photographing is an act of appropriating the subject being photographed, then painting a photograph is to look at a photograph intently, like studying a map of unfamiliar routes, to familiarise oneself with a foreign image. I blow up these photographs by tracing the original image through layers of watercolour paintings. Both the tourists and locals are constantly testing the colonial entrepôt’s limit in accommodating the fluxes of vehicular traffic. Many of the shop owners in George Town respond to this problem by creating makeshift parking sculptures of varying complexity, using throwaway or economical materials such as buckets, broken stools, wooden planks, tyres, brick, pinwheels, etc. Many of these sculptures look spontaneous and perfunctory; others are more considered and designed. It was designed by Stark &amp; McNeil, a British architectural firm, as the residence of Chinese merchant Lim Mah Chye (from 1919–22) and later acquired by local tycoon Yeap Chor Ee. Both were compradors, ‘middle men’ in the colonial enterprise who helped with the imperial trade networks in the 19th- and early 20th centuries; it was also a highly mobile social class that could move across different strata of colonial society, allowing them to be both local and ‘western’. Compradoric architecture can be found in treaty ports and colonial entrepôts like Shanghai, Macao, Batavia, and Hong Kong. Despite the European classical grandeur of the Homestead, there’s a hint of the owner’s cultural roots, such as the Chinese geomantic symbol ba gua found on the tympanum on the beach-facing façade.
